McGregor was established in 1882 at the intersection of the Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe and St. Louis Southwestern railroads. The depot, built by the Santa Fe Railway, dates to 1904.

James Burson, Chief of Police | Director | Appointed by City Manager
Chief James Burson started his law enforcement career with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) in 1977. He was stationed in Colorado City, Mitchell County for 11 years and Waco, McLennan County for 15 years. During his service with DPS he promoted to Sergeant and then Lieutenant for the Motor Vehicle Theft Service and served as Auto Theft Commander of the Heart of Texas Auto Theft Task Force for 7 years. After 27 years of service in Texas DPS he retired. He immediately transitioned into service with the Coryell County Sheriff’s Department as Lieutenant where he served another 4 years prior to joining the McGregor Police Department as Assistant Chief in February 2008. He has served as Chief of Police since March of 2017.

The McGregor Police Department provides 24-hour service to approximately 20 square miles within the city limits. There are 11 full-time commissioned officers and 5 full-time civilian personnel. Our 911 dispatch center is staffed around the clock and 1 full-time animal control officer also serves the community.

THE MCGREGOR REGIONAL AIRPORT

McGregor provides air access to the area by means of the McGregor Executive Airport. This former World War II training facility was acquired by the city in 1947. It has been the recipient of extensive capital improvements projects by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Aviation Division with grants totaling in excess of $10 million, which includes grants for the expansion of taxiway and hangar facilities, a grant to install a game resistant perimeter fence and a grant to construct apron area, t-hangar and rehabilitate runway.

MCGREGOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

With a commitment to the expansion of opportunity in our community, the McGregor EDC has continued to remind us that investment brings opportunity.
McGregor Economic DevelopmentThe McGregor EDC is a Texas Type B Economic Development Corporation that is funded by a ½ penny sales tax. This money may be used for any project eligible under Type A rules and several other project types, including quality of life improvements. Type B corporations may pay for land, buildings, equipment, facilities, targeted infrastructure and improvements for professional and amateur sports and athletic facilities, tourism and entertainment facilities, convention facilities and public parks; related store, restaurant, concession, parking and transportation facilities; related street, water and sewer facilities; and affordable housing.

Every community seeks out job creators; companies willing to invest and develop primary and secondary job opportunities. Because of the McGregor Economic Development Corporation, investments in these job creators is possible. As a type B Corporation, the MEDC may provide funds to businesses and industries for the following: public safety facilities; recycling facilities; streets, roads, drainage and related improvements; demolition of existing structures; general municipally owned improvements; and maintenance and operating costs associated with projects.
